What Moves the ETB to INR Rate?

The Ethiopian birr was released from a tightly controlled rate in July 2024 and now trades under a managed float, with the official rate set through central bank auctions. It fell sharply on day one and has kept sliding since, which is the defining fact about this currency. The chart above shows how that played out over the past year.

The Managed Float Ethiopia ended its long standing fixed rate and let the birr find a market level. The central bank still shapes the official rate through auctions rather than leaving it fully to the market.

That applies if your notes alone came to more than USD 5,000, or your notes and travellers cheques together came to more than USD 10,000.

How will I get paid when I sell Ethiopian Birr?

You are paid once your notes have been verified and the order is processed. Bank transfer is the standard route, so keep your account details ready at checkout. Cash payout is possible in some cases but is subject to regulatory limits, so confirm what applies to your amount before you book.
