Remit Money to Blocked Account in Germany from India with BookMyForex

A blocked account, or Sperrkonto, is a German bank account that holds your living costs for a year. You deposit the full sum before your visa appointment. The bank confirms the money is there. It then releases the money to you monthly after you arrive.

For a student visa in 2026, you must deposit 11,904 euros. That works out to 992 euros a month for a year. A language course visa or Opportunity Card needs more, at 13,092 euros. The figure follows the German student support rate.

Unlike a GIC in Canada, this one is not optional. Without the blocking confirmation, called a Sperrbestätigung, a German student visa is refused. The account must also hold the full amount. If it falls short, even slightly, the confirmation is not issued.

That makes the transfer itself critical. BookMyForex sends your funds through trusted banking channels, with live rates and clear charges, so the right amount lands.

Where to Open a Blocked Account in Germany

You open a blocked account online from India, before you travel. Fintiba and Expatrio are the two most used providers. Both are recognised by the German Federal Foreign Office. Both set up an account in minutes.

Coracle is a third provider, though it has not always been available. Some German banks offer blocked accounts too. They tend to be slower, and often want paperwork by post.

Most providers bundle health insurance with the account, since that is a separate visa need. Setup fees and monthly charges differ, so compare them before you pick one.

If Your Wire Transfer Gets Rejected

  • Why payments get rejected

Payments can fail due to incorrect beneficiary information, missing documents, missing payment references, or specific receiving bank requirements.

  • You will be notified

If a transaction is rejected, you will be informed of the exact cause and provided with clear instructions on what to do next.

  • Swift refund process & timeline

Eligible refunds are initiated immediately and typically reflect back in your account within 4 to 5 working days.

Documents Required for International Wire Transfer to Sperrkonto Account

The documents required for your international wire transfer to Blocked account in Germany depend on the purpose of remittance. Three documents are mandatory for all transfers:

  • PAN card
  • KYC and Address Proof (Aadhaar / Passport / Voter card)
  • Outward Remittance Application (A2 cum LRS Declaration)

Additional documents by purpose:

Required Documents:

• Admission letter / University offer letter
• Student's valid passport (if remitter is a close relative)

How Blocked Account Transfer Works

You register online and upload your passport. The provider opens the account and gives you a German IBAN. You then send the full amount from India in euros.

Funds usually take three to five working days to arrive. Once the provider confirms the balance, it issues your Sperrbestätigung. That document goes into your visa file.

After you reach Germany and activate the account, the bank releases 992 euros each month. Anything you deposit above the required sum is not blocked. That extra money stays available to you.

TCS on International Money Transfers from India

As per the Union Budget 2026, Tax Collected at Source (TCS) applies to outward remittances under LRS based on the purpose and amount of transfer. Here are the applicable TCS rates:

● Education via education loan: 0% TCS (any amount)
● Self-funded education & medical treatment: Nil up to ₹10 lakh; 2% above ₹10 lakh
● All other outward remittances: Nil up to ₹10 lakh; 20% above ₹10 lakh

Note: TCS is not a final tax, it can be claimed as credit when filing your ITR. BookMyForex auto-calculates applicable TCS at checkout so there are no surprises.

What to Get Right When You Transfer to a Blocked Account

What to check
Why it matters
Send the full amount, plus a buffer

Bank charges taken on the way can leave the account short, and a short account gets no confirmation.
Pay the charges at your end

Ask for the transfer to be sent with charges paid by you, so the full sum reaches the account.

Copy the IBAN exactly

One wrong character can send the money back and cost you a week.

Quote the reference number

Without it, the provider may not match the funds to your account.

Match the name exactly

The sender and account name should match your passport.

Send in euros

Sending dollars adds a second conversion and can leave you below the required sum.

Use the education purpose code

Education remittances are treated differently from other transfers under LRS.

Start six to eight weeks early

A delayed transfer can cost you the visa appointment slot.

Check the current figure

The required amount is reviewed each year, so confirm it before you send.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About Blocked Account Remittance

What is a Blocked Account, and do I need one for my Germany student visa?

A Blocked is a special account you open in Germany before you travel. It holds a fixed sum that proves to the visa officer you can support yourself for your first year. The money stays yours throughout, and is simply held in an account you cannot empty in one go. For most applicants this is the cleanest way to demonstrate funds, because the embassy has nothing to interpret. It is not the only accepted proof, though. Some applicants use a scholarship letter, a sponsor undertaking or bank statements instead. Requirements differ by visa route and they do change, so confirm what yours needs before you send any money.

How much money do I need to transfer to my Blocked Account?

These numbers are revised every year or two. Check the current figure with your embassy or your provider before you send, because sending too little is a common reason a file gets refused. That covers living costs for one year and nothing else. Your tuition and your travel money are counted apart from it, so budget for those on top. The figure goes up if family comes with you. Other visa routes usually need more, and a job-seeker or language-course visa is the common example.

Can I transfer money to my Blocked through BookMyForex?

Yes. You send it as an international wire transfer to the account your provider has opened for you in Germany. The account is in your own name, so you are sending money to yourself. Book the transfer online with us, upload your documents, and pay by UPI or net banking. We track the transfer until the money lands, and your provider then issues the confirmation letter you need for your visa file.

What documents do I need to transfer money to a Blocked Account?

You need the usual three: your PAN card, address proof such as Aadhaar or a passport, and an Outward Remittance Application (A2 cum LRS declaration) you fill in while booking. If this is an education transfer, you also need your admission or offer letter. On top of that you need the account details your provider sent you when the account was opened. Get the account number and the reference right, because a wrong reference is the most common cause of a delay.

Will I have to pay TCS on a transfer to my Blocked Account?

Usually yes, because these amounts often cross the tax threshold on their own. A transfer for education is taxed at 2% on anything above ₹10 lakh in a financial year. If you are funding it with an approved education loan, no TCS applies at all, whatever amount you transfer. TCS is not money you forfeit, though, because you can set it against your income tax or claim it back when you file your annual return. It does not apply to NRIs.

How long does the transfer take, and when should I start?

The transfer itself usually completes within 12 to 48 business hours once your documents are checked and your payment clears. That is not the number to plan around, though. Your provider still has to confirm the money and issue your funding certificate, and that adds days. Start at least four to six weeks before your visa appointment. Students who begin two weeks out leave themselves no room if anything needs fixing.

How much does it cost to transfer money to a Blocked Account?

You get our lowest exchange rates with no hidden markups, which saves you up to 5% against a typical bank rate. A bank fee of ₹320 plus GST applies to the transfer and Nostro charges of ₹1,180 apply depending on the route your money travels. On a sum this size the exchange rate matters far more than the fee, so compare the rate first. Every applicable cost is displayed before you confirm.

Can my parents send the money, or does it have to come from me?

Either. Many students send it themselves, and many parents send it for them. A student who has not left India yet is still an Indian resident, so the transfer goes out under the usual education rules and draws on that person's yearly limit. One thing to check first: some providers want the sender's name to match the student or a named sponsor. Confirm your provider's rule before you book, because a mismatch can hold up the funding certificate.

When do I get the money back from my Blocked Account?

Not as a lump sum, and that restriction is the entire point of the account. You get access after you land in Germany and activate the account. From then the money is released to you in installments, usually monthly, until it is exhausted. Your provider sets the exact schedule and explains how to move each installment into a local account. It remains your money throughout, and is simply paced so that it lasts your first year.

What happens to my money if my visa is rejected?

You get it back. Every provider has a refund route for a refused visa, and you will normally need the official rejection letter from the embassy or consulate. Ask your provider how long a refund takes before you open the account, as it varies. One thing to be aware of: you are refunded in the foreign currency you sent, so the rupee amount you get back depends on the exchange rate on the day it is converted. That can work for you or against you.

Can bank holidays affect my international money transfer to Sperrkonto Account?

Yes. Banking holidays, including Saturdays and Sundays, in India or the destination country can affect processing timelines. Our team helps you identify applicable holidays in advance so you can plan your payment accordingly and avoid unnecessary delays.

What if my passport was issued in a foreign country? Will I be treated as an Indian resident?

Yes, if you can confirm and provide evidence of residing in India for more than 182 days in the preceding financial year. You will be asked to submit all pages of your passport to validate your immigration stamps and timeline.

How will cashback for promo codes be credited and managed?

Cashback is credited as MyCash to your MMT wallet within 3 days of Forex order delivery and card activation, where applicable. MyCash can be used on flights, hotels and holidays, and for buses and cabs on bookings of ₹500 or more. It is valid for 90 days from the date of credit.
