Remit Money from India for Family with BookMyForex

Lakhs of Indian families send money abroad every year to support the people closest to them. Parents send funds to a son who has just started work overseas. Adult children send monthly support to a mother or father living with a sibling in another country. Spouses send money to a partner who moved abroad for a job.

These are rarely one time payments. Most families send money every month or every quarter, and they keep doing it for years. A poor exchange rate looks small on a single transfer. Across twelve transfers a year, it quietly turns into a large sum. Hidden fees do the same thing. And when a transfer is delayed, someone abroad is left waiting on rent money or a bill that is already due.

This is why the platform you send from matters. BookMyForex lets you send money to your family at live, interbank linked rates with every charge shown before you pay. You can lock a rate for up to three days, track the order end to end, and get SWIFT proof once the money moves. Support is available on call and on chat, so you are never guessing where your transfer is.

Popular Destinations for Family Remittance

Family transfers from India are concentrated in countries with large, established Indian communities. The United States is among the countries that receive the highest volumes, led by families in Edison, the Bay Area, Dallas and Chicago, where working professionals and recent graduates receive regular support from home.

Canada follows closely, with Toronto, Brampton, Surrey and Calgary seeing steady monthly transfers tied to students who stayed on and to parents on PR. The United Kingdom sees similar volumes into London, Birmingham and Manchester.

Australia and New Zealand attract regular maintenance transfers to Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland, mostly linked to employment and family reunification. Families in India also send money to relatives working in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, usually for rent and household costs. Germany and Singapore round out the list, driven by IT, engineering and finance roles.

If Your Wire Transfer Gets Rejected

  • Why payments get rejected

Payments can fail due to incorrect beneficiary information, missing documents, missing payment references, or specific receiving bank requirements.

  • You will be notified

If a transaction is rejected, you will be informed of the exact cause and provided with clear instructions on what to do next.

  • Swift refund process & timeline

Eligible refunds are initiated immediately and typically reflect back in your account within 4 to 5 working days.

Purposes for Which You Can Transfer Money from India for Family

As per  RBI's Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS)  Indian residents can send up to USD 2,50,000 per financial year. Here are the key reasons for Family remittance:

  • Monthly Maintenance for Close Relatives  The most common family transfer. A fixed amount goes to a spouse, son, daughter, parent or sibling abroad, usually on the same date each month.
  • Rent and Household Bills Rent is the biggest monthly cost abroad. Families send money a few days before the due date so it clears in time, along with utility, internet and phone bills.
  • Support for Elderly Parents Living Abroad Many parents now live with a child who has settled overseas. Their children in India send regular help for household costs and personal expenses, often for years.
  • Setting Up a New Home After Relocation The first few months after a move cost the most. A flat deposit, furniture, a car, a laptop and warm clothes all come at once.
  • Transport and Everyday Costs Car payments, fuel, public transport and groceries. These are small on their own but they repeat every month and add up over a year.
  • Medical and Health Expenses Doctor visits, prescriptions, dental work and health insurance premiums can fall outside what an employer covers. Families send money to help meet these costs, often at short notice.

Documents Required for International Wire Transfer from India for Family Remittance

The documents required for your international wire transfer for family maintenance are:

  • PAN card
  • KYC and Address Proof (Aadhaar / Passport / Voter card)
  • Outward Remittance Application (A2 cum LRS Declaration)
  • Proof of Relationship

How Money Is Received for Family Remittance

A family transfer usually follows one route: money moves from your Indian bank account directly to your relative’s bank account abroad. It cannot be sent to your own overseas account under this purpose.

You’ll need the recipient’s exact account name, account number and SWIFT/BIC code. Depending on the country, you may also need an IBAN, ABA routing number, sort code or BSB code. Always match the account name with the bank statement.

The money must go directly to the relative, not to a landlord or hospital on their behalf. The sender must be an Indian citizen with a valid savings account.

Use the correct RBI purpose code. For family maintenance, it is S1301. Medical treatment, education and gifts have different codes and tax rules.

Keep your PAN, address proof, signed LRS form and relationship declaration ready. TCS applies above ₹10 lakh in a financial year at the applicable rate and can generally be claimed as a tax credit when filing your ITR.

TCS on International Money Transfers from India

As per the Union Budget 2026, Tax Collected at Source (TCS) applies to outward remittances under LRS based on the purpose and amount of transfer. Here are the applicable TCS rates:

● Education via education loan: 0% TCS (any amount)
● Self-funded education & medical treatment: Nil up to ₹10 lakh; 2% above ₹10 lakh
● All other outward remittances: Nil up to ₹10 lakh; 20% above ₹10 lakh

Note: TCS is not a final tax, it can be claimed as credit when filing your ITR. BookMyForex auto-calculates applicable TCS at checkout so there are no surprises.

Send Money Overseas from India for Close Relatives with the BookMyForex App

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About Overseas Family Remittance

Can I send money abroad from India for Family remittance?

Yes. You can send money abroad for Family remittance. It is a purpose the RBI allows under its Liberalised Remittance Scheme, known as LRS. Any resident Indian can use the scheme, and so can minors. You do not need separate RBI approval. BookMyForex sends your money through partner banks that the RBI has authorised, so the transfer is fully FEMA compliant. A few things are barred, such as lottery tickets and forex margin trading. Transfers to countries on the FATF high-risk list are barred too.

How much money can I send abroad for Family remittance in a year?

You can send up to USD 250,000 in a financial year. That ceiling covers every purpose together, not each one on its own. So a transfer for Close Relatives draws on the same yearly pot as any school fee or hospital bill you have paid abroad. The limit is tracked against your PAN across all banks, not bank by bank. Three purposes can go past it without RBI approval. These are education, medical treatment and emigration. For those you need a written estimate from the university, the hospital or the country you are moving to. Every other purpose needs RBI permission to cross the line.

Will I have to pay TCS on a transfer for Family remittance?

How much you pay depends on why you are sending the money. Education paid for by an approved education loan is fully exempt from TCS. Education and medical transfers are taxed at 2% on the amount above ₹10 lakh in a financial year. Overseas tour packages are taxed at a flat 2% from the very first rupee, with no threshold at all. Every other purpose, including gifts, donations, family support and emigration, is taxed at 20% above ₹10 lakh. TCS is not really a fee, though, because you can set it against your income tax or claim it back when you file your return. It does not apply to NRIs.

What documents do I need to send money abroad for Close Relatives?

Three are needed every time: your PAN card, address proof such as Aadhaar or a passport, and a completed Outward Remittance Application (A2 cum LRS Declaration) filled at the time of booking. On top of that you need one document that proves your purpose. For education it is the offer letter and the fee invoice. For family support it is proof of how you are related. For medical care it is the hospital estimate. For a donation it is the charity's registration details. Everything is uploaded online, so there is no branch to visit.

Who am I allowed to send the money to?

That depends on the purpose you pick, and it is the rule people get wrong most often. Family maintenance is the strictest. It only covers close relatives as the Companies Act 2013 defines them: your spouse, parents, children, son's wife, daughter's husband, brothers and sisters. Cousins, uncles, aunts, nieces and friends are not on that list. You can still send them money, but it has to go as a gift instead, which changes both the code and the paperwork. Education money can go to the college or to the student. A donation has to reach the organisation's own account, never a person collecting for it.

What is a purpose code, and does it matter which one I pick?

Every transfer out of India is reported to the RBI under a code that says why the money is going. It is not a formality. The code decides which TCS rate applies and which papers your bank has to collect. Picking the wrong one on purpose, such as calling an investment a gift to pay less tax, counts as misclassification. That carries consequences under FEMA and under the Income Tax Act. Our team confirms the right code with you before your money moves.

How long does a transfer for Family remittance take?

Most transfers are completed within 12 to 48 business hours. The clock starts once your documents have been checked and your payment has gone through. Education transfers are treated as priority and can land the same day, sometimes in about six hours. Missing or mismatched documents are the usual reason a transfer gets delayed. Uploading the correct proof at the start is the single best thing you can do to speed yours up.

How much does it cost to send money abroad for Family remittance?

You get our lowest exchange rates with no hidden markups, which saves you up to 5% against a typical bank rate. A bank fee of ₹320 plus GST applies to each transfer and Nostro charges of ₹1,180 apply depending on the route your money travels. The fee stays the same whatever you are sending the money for. What changes with the purpose is the TCS, not the charge itself. Every applicable cost is displayed clearly before you confirm your order.

Can NRIs send money abroad for Family remittance?

LRS is designed for residents, so an LRS transfer leaves from a resident savings account. NRIs move money a different way, through NRE or NRO repatriation, which carries its own rules and limits and no LRS TCS. BookMyForex handles both. Not sure which category you fall into? Under FEMA you are usually treated as a resident if you spent more than 182 days in India during the previous financial year.

Why might a transfer for Close Relatives be delayed or rejected?

Usually because something does not line up. The purpose you selected may not match the document you uploaded. The person you are paying may not qualify under that purpose. The name on their account may differ from the name on your paperwork. Or your yearly LRS limit may already be exhausted at another bank. Transfers to countries on the FATF high-risk list are refused outright. Checking these four things before you book prevents almost every delay.

How is my Family remittance processed, and will an intermediary bank be involved?

Transfers are processed through our authorised banking partners and available payment routes to help reduce unnecessary processing steps and delays. Depending on the payment route, an intermediary bank may be involved before the funds reach the receiving bank. Processing time and any applicable charges can vary based on the destination, currency and receiving bank.

Can bank holidays affect my international money transfer for Close Relatives?

Yes. Banking holidays, including Saturdays and Sundays, in India or the destination country can affect processing timelines. Our team helps you identify applicable holidays in advance so you can plan your payment accordingly and avoid unnecessary delays.

What if my passport was issued in a foreign country? Will I be treated as an Indian resident?

Yes, if you can confirm and provide evidence of residing in India for more than 182 days in the preceding financial year. You will be asked to submit all pages of your passport to validate your immigration stamps and timeline.

How will cashback for promo codes be credited and managed?

Cashback is credited as MyCash to your MMT wallet within 3 days of Forex order delivery and card activation, where applicable. MyCash can be used on flights, hotels and holidays, and for buses and cabs on bookings of ₹500 or more. It is valid for 90 days from the date of credit. For MyBiz purchases, cashback is credited to the linked Personal MMT wallet.
