Table Manners and Dining Etiquette in Thailand

You’ll have a much better dining experience if you know Thai etiquette and table manners. Here are some general tips that I believe would be helpful:

1. When entering a Thai restaurant, you can greet others with a Wai, a traditional Thai greeting. Place your palms together in a prayer-like gesture and bow slightly to show respect.

2. In Thailand, people prefer not to use their left hand when eating or passing food. The left hand is considered unclean, due to certain hygiene practices.

3. When using chopsticks, avoid pointing them directly at others or leaving them standing vertically in a bowl of food. Instead, place them horizontally across your plate or bowl when not in use.

4. Many Thai dishes are eaten with the fingers. This is especially true for casual dining. If you are eating in a more formal setting, you may be given a fork and spoon. However, it is perfectly acceptable to use your fingers.

5. Blowing your nose at the table is considered rude in Thailand. If you want to blow your nose, please excuse yourself and go to the restroom.

6. Talking with your mouth full of food is not considered a good thing in Thailand. It is also impolite to make loud noises when you eat.

7. Tipping at restaurants is not expected in Thailand, but it is appreciated. A small tip of around 10-15% is appropriate.

8. When you are finished eating, you can show appreciation for your food by saying “kaew khao” (thank you for the food).

How many of these Thai restaurants have you been to? I’d love to know!
