Europe Travel Guide (Rules, Destinations, Forex Hacks)

A single Schengen visa unlocks 29 countries with no internal border checks, which is why Europe is the great multi-country trip for Indian travellers. But that same freedom hides a trap: you can cross five borders in a week and, if you carry money the wrong way, lose a slice of your budget at every card swipe. Europe rewards planning, and the money side is where most trips quietly overspend.

Most of Europe is the Schengen Area of 29 countries, entered on one Schengen visa (€90, roughly Rs 8,300) allowing 90 days per 180. The UK and Ireland need separate visas. Indians should budget Rs 1.5 to 4 lakh a week, carry euros on a zero-markup forex card, and always confirm current visa rules.

This guide covers the rules Indian travellers must know, where to go and what to see, how to shop, eat, and get around, the emergency and medical basics, and the forex hacks that keep more of your budget on the trip and less in conversion fees. There is a luxury and cruise section at the end for travellers planning the top-end version.

The Rules: Schengen and Beyond

The Schengen Area covers 29 European countries that share a common visa and no internal border controls. One Schengen visa lets you move freely between them, which is what makes a multi-country European itinerary practical on a single application. Bulgaria and Romania became full members on 1 January 2025, bringing the total to 29; the only EU states outside the zone are Ireland and Cyprus.

Where to apply

You apply to the country where you will spend the most days, or the first country you enter if the days are split evenly. The short-stay visa allows up to 90 days within any 180-day window across the whole area combined, not per country.

The exceptions

Not all of Europe is Schengen. The UK and Ireland run their own visa systems and need separate applications. A few European countries sit outside the zone entirely. Always check whether a destination is inside Schengen before assuming one visa covers it.

The Rules: Schengen and Beyond

ETIAS and EES: the new border systems

Two EU systems are worth knowing about. The Entry/Exit System (EES), which digitally records non-EU arrivals and departures with biometrics, is already operational at Schengen borders. ETIAS, a separate travel authorisation for visa-exempt nationalities, has been delayed repeatedly and, as of September 2026, has no confirmed launch date, with 2027 the most likely window. Either way, ETIAS does not replace the Schengen visa for Indians, who still need the full visa. Because these timelines keep shifting, confirm the current entry rules for your travel dates before you book.

Destinations Worth Building Around

Europe is dense with options, so anchoring a trip around a theme beats trying to see everything.

1. The classic first trip

Paris, Amsterdam, and the Swiss Alps make a strong first-timer loop: iconic sights, easy rail links, and enough variety across a week to feel like several trips in one.

2. The Mediterranean summer

Spain, Italy, and Greece deliver beaches, food, and history. Valencia and Barcelona, Rome and the Amalfi coast, and the Greek islands pair well for a warm-weather itinerary, and August aligns with festivals like La Tomatina.

3. Central Europe on rail

Prague, Vienna, and Budapest sit close together and connect by fast trains, giving grand architecture and lower costs than Western Europe, which stretches a budget further.

Sightseeing: The Landmarks and the Hidden Corners

The headline sights are famous for a reason. The Eiffel Tower and the Louvre in Paris, the Colosseum and Vatican in Rome, Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia, and Amsterdam’s canals and museums anchor most first itineraries. For these, booking timed-entry tickets online well ahead saves hours of queuing, and many are cheaper or free on certain days.

The interesting Europe, though, often sits one street back from the landmark. The Cinque Terre villages on the Italian Riviera, Portugal’s Sintra palaces, the Swiss mountain villages reached by cogwheel train, Vienna’s coffee houses, and the old towns of Prague and Kraków reward travellers who slow down. A good rule is to pair one big-ticket sight with one unhurried neighbourhood each day rather than racing through a checklist.

Shopping: From Local Markets to Tax Refunds

Europe’s shopping ranges from weekend flea markets to flagship fashion houses. Paris and Milan are the fashion capitals, Switzerland is the place for watches, and every city has food markets worth an afternoon, from Barcelona’s La Boqueria to the Christmas markets of Germany and Austria in winter.

The money hack that most Indian shoppers miss is the VAT refund. Non-EU residents can reclaim a portion of the value-added tax on eligible purchases above a per-shop minimum, processed at the airport on departure with the stamped forms and receipts.

It is not automatic, so ask the shop for a tax-free form at purchase, keep the goods accessible for customs, and allow extra time at the airport to complete the refund before flying out.

The Rules: Schengen and Beyond

Food: What to Eat and How to Save

Eating well in Europe is easy; eating well without overspending takes a little strategy. Each country has its signature: pasta, pizza, and gelato in Italy; tapas and paella in Spain; pastries and cheese in France; schnitzel and pretzels in Central Europe. Indian travellers will also find well-established Indian restaurants in every major city, useful for a familiar meal or vegetarian and Jain options.

To keep costs sensible, eat where locals eat rather than in the square beside the main monument, look for the fixed-price lunch menu that many restaurants run midday, and use bakeries and food markets for cheap, high-quality breakfasts and lunches.

A common charge to expect is the cover or service fee added in some countries, and tipping in Europe is modest, usually rounding up or leaving five to ten percent, not the twenty percent expected in the US.

Commuting: Getting Around Cities and Countries

Europe’s rail network is dense and often the most pleasant way to hop borders, with high-speed lines linking major cities. Budget airlines cover longer gaps cheaply if booked early. Within Schengen there are no passport checks between countries, so intercity travel feels closer to moving within one country than crossing borders.

Inside cities, public transport is excellent and usually the smartest choice: metros, trams, and buses run on tap-in contactless cards or day passes, and many historic centres are best walked. A rail pass can pay off for a multi-country trip with several long train legs, while a mix of budget flights and point-to-point tickets often works out cheaper for a two- or three-city trip.

This ease of movement is also why forex planning matters: a week can span the euro, the Swiss franc, and the Hungarian forint, and each currency switch is a chance to lose money if you are paying by an Indian credit card.

Emergencies and Staying Safe

The single most useful number to memorise is 112, the common emergency number across all EU countries, reaching police, ambulance, and fire. It works free of charge from any mobile, often even without a SIM or credit, and operators in many countries can assist in English. Some countries keep national lines alongside it, such as 110 for police in Germany, but 112 always works.

The most common problem tourists face is not violence but pickpocketing, concentrated around crowded landmarks, metros, and tourist queues. Keep your passport, forex card, and phone secure, carry a photocopy or digital scan of your passport separately, and note the location of the Indian embassy or consulate in your destination in case your passport is lost. If your forex card is lost or stolen, report it to the issuer immediately to block it; a card can be reissued, cash cannot be recovered.

The Medical System: What to Expect

Healthcare standards across Western Europe are high, but as a non-resident you pay for treatment, which is exactly why travel insurance with at least €30,000 of medical cover is mandatory for a Schengen visa in the first place. Keep the policy number and the insurer’s 24-hour assistance line saved on your phone and on paper.

For minor issues, pharmacies (marked with a green cross) are widespread and pharmacists can advise on and dispense many common remedies without a doctor. For anything serious, go to a hospital emergency department or call 112, then contact your insurer’s assistance line, which can guide you to an approved hospital and handle billing.

Carry any regular medication in its original packaging with a copy of the prescription, since some medicines available over the counter in India need a prescription in Europe.

Forex Hacks for a Multi-Country Trip

  1. Load a multi-currency forex card with the currencies you will actually use, such as EUR, plus CHF for Switzerland or GBP for a UK leg, so each country draws from the matching wallet with no cross-currency fee.
  2. Switch the active wallet in the issuer’s app as you cross borders, so a swipe in Zurich pulls from the franc wallet, not the euro one.
  3. Avoid paying by Indian credit card abroad, which adds around 3.5 percent forex markup plus GST on every transaction and charges ATM withdrawals even harder.
  4. Skip airport currency counters, which offer the worst rates; load at live interbank rates before you fly instead.
  5. Decline “pay in INR” (dynamic currency conversion) when a foreign terminal offers it, since it bakes in a poor rate; always choose to pay in the local currency.

The Luxury and Cruise Segment

For travellers planning the top-end version of Europe, the continent is one of the world’s great luxury playgrounds, and the spend concentrates in a few categories where a forex card’s zero markup quietly saves the most, because the transactions are large.

Luxury stays and experiences

The grand hotels of Paris, the Amalfi coast, Lake Como, and the Swiss Alps, along with Michelin-starred dining, private museum tours, and designer shopping on Paris’s Avenue Montaigne or Milan’s Quadrilatero, define high-end Europe.

A private driver or chauffeured day trips, helicopter transfers in the Alps, and vineyard tours in Bordeaux, Tuscany, and the Douro Valley round out the experience. On bills of this size, the forex markup an ordinary credit card adds runs into real money, so a zero-markup card matters more here, not less.

Mediterranean and river cruises

Europe suits two very different cruise styles. Mediterranean sailings from Barcelona, Rome, or Venice string together coastal cities and islands, while river cruises along the Rhine, Danube, and Douro offer a slower, scenic route through the heart of the continent, docking in the centre of historic towns.

Cruise fares are usually paid in advance in euros or dollars, but onboard accounts, shore excursions, and port-town shopping are all live foreign-currency spends where the card you use still decides the rate.

Paying smart at the top end

The luxury traveller’s forex logic is the same as anyone’s, only amplified: large euro transactions magnify both a bad rate and a good one. Loading euros on a forex card at live interbank rates, with no issuance or cross-currency fee, means a five-figure hotel or cruise settlement is not quietly inflated by a card network’s markup. For a multi-country luxury itinerary, a multi-currency card covering EUR, CHF, and GBP keeps every high-value swipe on the right wallet.

Where to Check the Real Cost

Rates on cards and at counters are rarely shown against the live interbank benchmark, which is where the loss hides across a multi-country trip. The BookMyForex forex card range lets you load multiple currencies at real-time interbank rates with zero issuance, reload, or cross-currency fees, and the live EUR to INR page shows the benchmark euro rate in real time.

Compare that against what your credit card would apply at each border. On a trip that touches several currencies, the savings compound at every swipe. Sort the visa, plan the route, load the right currencies, and Europe opens up without the budget quietly leaking away.
