Are you someone who is too afraid to apply for a university abroad and keep postponing it? Well, no to stress out then. Applying to universities abroad can be a little daunting. Thus, it is important to know the different application systems in your country of choice. The main issue every student face is to figure out where to start from when it comes to choosing a university outside their home country. There are a series of stages one needs to follow to get in their application: do the research work, narrow down the choices of university, write the application, and finally play the waiting game.

So, for those looking to study abroad, here is a simple guide that includes many of the tools and resources you require to make an informed decision and create applications that would show your true potential.

1) Understand different systems:

Applications to university can either be centralized or decentralized.UK follows the centralized process that is operated by Ucas (The Universities and Colleges Admissions services). In this process the students need to meet the minimum entrance requirement criteria. Along with this, it also allows the student to apply for up to five courses. These criteria are limited to UK itself. Whereas in Australia, you can apply for up to nine courses. The state of California in the US follows the centralized system like some European countries. Such type of system generally assesses the students based on academic results.

Countries like the USA, France, Germany, and Spain follow a decentralized system. In this type of system each university establish their own set of values and requirements. They mostly advise their students to submit applications by November, and make regular offers in January or February. These universities assess the students on a holistic basis of grades, test scores, extracurricular activities, letter of recommendations and essays.

2)Choose your University:

After understanding the systems followed by different Universities in different country, now it will be a little clear to choose the university of your choice. The next step before starting your university application process is to do a research about the various options available. Finding a good University of your choice is indeed a daunting task. Hence while doing the research work, try to look for the University’s mission statement as this would help you to identify what higher education institutions value and look for in the applications. The most important factors would be to consider the visa requirements and the funding opportunities. This would be followed by the other factors that are essential for the application process to carry forward such as the entry requirements, funding and financial factors, subjects, and courses available and many more. It is always worth applying to a range of institutions so that at least you have one back up choice.

3) Preparing your University Application:

If you have already made up your mind that you will be studying abroad then you must also be aware about the fact that you cannot escape the dreaded piece of personal writings once you have narrowed down your options, you need to start writing your university application. Every country has a different writing process. In the United States, most of the colleges often expect extensive personal essays, that should be designed in a manner that they reveal much more than just your academic skills. You need to keep in mind that such type of essays portrays flair and personality. In UK, the personal statement is more formal and structured when it comes to academic achievements, motivation, and extracurricular activities. Incase if English is not your first language then you need to take English as a foreign language test.

4) The final stage-After Applying:

Once the University Application has been written, the next step is to submit your application on time. Every university or rather every country follows a different submission process. You must do a lot of research work before you go about this process. In the UK, the deadline for submitting the UCAS application is usually the middle of January. Once you have successfully submitted your application then the waiting game begins. Some universities carry out the second stage of the application process that involves the interview round. After all these formalities have been done, the decision comes once again in your hand that if you seriously want to pursue you higher education from a college in abroad.
