Vietnam is one of those rare destinations that not only is cheap but offers fantastic sights. You can survive on a shoestring budget if you travel to Vietnam. You can live in a dorm for as cheap as $7 and even a hotel room costs between $25-$30 a night. You can eat the street food which tastes amazing and is economical.
2: Northern Thailand
Why: Buddhist temples, Hill tribes, and food markets. Beautiful nature allows for trekking, caving, rafting, and more. Party scenes in Pai and Chiang Pai are happening.
One may wonder and ask, isn’t Thailand an expensive tourist resort destination? That is true to the extent of if you go to beaches in the south, and not up north, into the inlands. A train journey which is cheap and costs around $12 will take you into the inlands. The rooms in any backpacker dorms are as cheap as $4 and private rooms with basic amenities start at as little as $8. Stick to local transportation and you will save a fortune. If you stick to inlands, Thailand is an easy travel destination all thanks to convenient transport. But watch out for popular islands or beaches, some of them are overrated and expensive
3: Morrocco
Why: Sahara, ancient medinas, Atlas Mountains, Trekking, laidback surfer towns on the Atlantic
When it comes to exotic places to travel, Morocco is right up at the top. Food at any authentic Moroccan eatery will cost you around $2-$3. You will find cheap accommodation for as less as $5 and there are backpacker hostels as well. Travelling around is cheap as well.
4: Albania
Why: Ancient castles, white sand beaches, mountain trekking, remnants of communist past
Albania offers beautiful white sand beaches, while inland you’ll find huge mountain ranges as well as the buzzing capital of Tirana. The country doesn’t have as many direct flight connections as some others, so it can be easier or cheaper to fly to nearby Corfu in Greece or start a trip in Dubrovnik in Croatia
5: Nicaragua
Why: Epic volcanoes, Caribbean islands, mountain coffee regions, surfing, volcano boarding, and only half the cost of Costa Rica
You will be able to find a good dorm bed in the colonial city of Grenada just a block from the main square for just $5 a night. Basic privates (with a shared bathroom) can be found for around $10 a night even in the touristy seaside town of San Juan Del Sur. Transportation is cheap and very convenient too.
6: Indonesia
Why: From white sand beaches to jungles and savannahs, from blue flame spewing volcanoes to remote rain forests where you can meet Uran Utangs in the wild.. it’s a country almost too big to summarise
There is an Indonesia which is famous. The scenic landscape and sandy white beaches but then there is another Indonesia. Go even just a little inland on popular Bali and you’ll find that prices drop and places begin to feel a bit more authentic. And you can spend a day on just $25
7: Bolivia
Why: Salt flats of Uyuni, visiting La Paz (the world’s highest capital), climbing Huayna Potosi, mountain biking the former world’s most dangerous road, Amazon jungle tours, and relaxing in the colonial town of Sucre
Bolivia is by far the cheapest travel destination in South America. You can find basic dorm rooms for as little as $5. Even the better ones are around $10. If you’re not too fussed, you can get wonderfully filling Bolivian set meals for about 20-25 Bolivianos (or $3), or international style meals for about double that.
